Have you ever said the following or heard:   “_____ has so much energy, “

“I have no energy to go (or) do _______”

Have you ever felt someone before they have entered the room?

Have you ever felt ‘drained’ after being around certain people or places?

Have you ever felt ‘uplifted’ or ‘relaxed’ around certain people?

Have you felt good when someone pats you on the back or given you a hug?

If you said yes to at least one of these questions you have been interacting and experiencing Reiki, Energy.

Reiki Background

Reiki—The word is based on two Japanese kanji’s “rei” and “ki” the American translation of this kanji is “rei” meaning flow, light, universe and “ki” meaning energy.  Together the acceptable translation to English is “universal life force energy.”

According to many different Reiki authors, it was founded by a Japanese man, named Mikao Usui in the early 1900’s after Usui meditated on a mountain called Mt. Kurama.

In the 1940’s a woman by the name of Mrs. Takata, a Japanese-American went to Japan to learn about Reiki after her own miraculous healing she experienced.  She moved back to the U.S. and started teaching Usui Reiki to others, and that, is the short version of how Reiki came to the western world.
Reiki, Prana, Energy, Energy Medicine, etc,  it goes by many names, and many different styles but it all deals with the energy in the body and surrounding the body.

It is experiential, think of getting a hug from someone that loves you unconditionally, that is what an Energy/Reiki session feels like.

Remember, when someone says "Reiki" they are saying "Universal Life Force Energy."
This is why Ojai Reiki uses both terms Reiki, Energy to remind you of what you are learning about.

What does Reiki, Energy do?

Universal Life Force Energy works physiologically on the body which then affects your emotional, physical, mental and spiritual health.  The Energy has a positive affect, restoring every system in the body, bringing balance which results in decreasing your stress in every area of the body that is worked on during a session.  We all know that stress causes symptoms that lead to ill-ness—when stress is reduced, vitality improves.

A common question posed to a new student in Reiki, Level I, is: what do you do when you stub your toe?  You put your hands on it, and the pain diminishes or disappears altogether.

There is a natural balance and flow to the body that can sometimes get clogged, like a sink pipe, when there is debris over time, buildup can occur.  This can produce blocks which misdirect the natural flow of energy throughout the body causing physical or emotional disconnections in certain areas of the body.  These blockages prevent you from being your Optimal Self.

Just as there is some sort of grace that automatically tells the brain to send signals to perform such operations as breathing, cellular generation and degeneration, or make the heart pump blood, there is a grace that automatically tells a Reiki or Energy Practitioner what to do when he or she performs a Reiki/Energy session on a person.  There is an ‘energy’ something that can be felt by both practitioner and client (sometimes the client doesn't feel this) that emanates from in and around person’s body.

We know how the brain sends signals to the rest of the body and these signals fire simultaneously at warp speed to tell the hand to move off the hot pot or to make the bones grow new bone cells, but the question is: Why does the brain do this?  An answer could be, to create homeostasis in the body.  Okay, that’s part of an answer but it doesn’t answer the whole question, why does the body do what it does?  You can get even more existential and ask why do humans exist on Earth anyway?

Okay so where does this 'energy' come from?
In my humble experience, over the years of practicing hands on healing (Reiki, Energy) on myself, it seems to me that the 'thing' that tells a cell divide, comes from the same Source and here are a few debatable names of that same source:  Source, Love, Divine Energy, God, etc. Not so scientific--for you can create your own conclusions using whatever words for the experience you have during a session.

Philosophically speaking, words are arbitrarily created by us (humans), lexicons are a consensus based on mass usage of a word.   Words are also created from powerful organizations that get to create new words things based on who discovered what (a species of bugs names after famed cartoonist Gary Larson creator of the Far Side).

The point is that if you are looking for a legitimate answer that is culturally relative, then I challenge you to go beyond everything you think you know and seek your own information based on your own experience.
