What is CranioSacral therapy?
This is taken from The Upledger Institute, the leader in craniosacral therapy training.
“CST was pioneered and developed by osteopathic physician John E. Upledger following extensive scientific studies from 1975 to 1983 at Michigan State University, where he served as a clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics.
CST is a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the functioning of a physiological body system called the craniosacral system – comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord.
Using a soft touch generally no greater than 5 grams, or about the weight of a nickel, practitioners release restrictions in the craniosacral system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.
By complementing the body’s natural healing processes, CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease, and [can be] effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction, including:
* Migraine Headaches * Chronic Neck and Back Pain * Motor-Coordination Impairments * Colic * Autism * Central Nervous System Disorders * Orthopedic Problems * Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries * Scoliosis * Infantile Disorders * Learning Disabilities * Chronic Fatigue * Emotional Difficulties * Stress and Tension-Related Problems * Fibromyalgia and other Connective-Tissue Disorders * Temporomandibular Joint Syndrome (TMJ) * Neurovascular or Immune Disorders * Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder * Post-Surgical Dysfunction”
MY PERSONAL EXPERIENCE
After having a freak-24-hour-cold/allergy attack when I was living in Kathmandu a few years ago, I was fortunate to meet a traveler from New England who is a homeopathic RN and who practiced CST (CranioSacral therapy). She offered me a session after seeing me being miserable with head congestion (I spent the last 24 hours and I am not kidding you, sneezing). I am telling you it was weird, sneezing non-stop, during my waking hours. I don’t know how I slept.
She gave me a CranioSacral session and some herbal supplements to support my immune system after the session. She put her hands on my head and I could feel my cranial bones float, it felt like my bones were twirling underneath her fingertips. **Remember, I had been practicing Reiki on myself and learned massage so my senses are more acute to this subtle work.** I could feel the contents in my head shifting and unwinding and my brain felt like it was on a fun slide. I was so relaxed and amazed, I just let it happen. I thought, “wow, she is really moving stuff around in me noggin!”
She worked under my thoracic part of my spine and again, I could feel fascia and fluids moving in different directions I couldn’t understand how her hands, which were under my body, could move around so much.
I told her how amazed I was that she was moving so much stuff. And she replied,”Your body is dancing in my hands, I’m just following the movements.” She worked on my sacrum which was doing the Waltz, it was so incredible how she was just holding her hand under me, supporting and following– the slightest of movements felt like mountains were moving.
Immediately after the session, my head was clear, no congestion, I could breathe through my nose again! That day and the following day was unbelievable. I felt so crisp, and clear; my mental clarity was so sharp you could cut steel on it. I couldn’t believe I had been walking around with a cloudy head. It was as if the two hemispheres in my brain were finally joined and working together simultaneously and functioning like a shiny new MacBook. You know when you first get your computer it’s so fast and then as time goes on, it starts getting sluggish and no matter how much you try to clean up your computer it never runs like it did out of the box? Yeah, that’s what I felt like after my session, like a brand new computer out of the box. I felt clear, in the present, there weren’t a flurry of non-linear thoughts, it was like think this, and I would see the pathway and do it. I felt like she screwed my head in a little tighter so that all the wires were lined up and firing the way they should be.
I was inspired to learn, and I would practice on my friends and incorporate it into my massage and energy work practice. Due to my background in somatic therapies, I understood the mechanics and nuances of CransioSacral work and create a similar experience. It wasn’t until I had another CransioSacral session with Dr. Tobi Redlich in Ojai that pushed me into taking a course.
I had slept on my neck wrong and it was spasiming when I would get up from a lying position and I was in constant pain. After getting a massage, and doing an infrared sauna, I was referred to see Dr. Redlich who is a chiropractor and does CranioSacral (along with other talents). She adjusted my spine using non-force techniques and she worked on my arm and got it unwind and held a trigger point under my rhomboids for a while. After 2 sessions, she alleviated my pain by 85% and my neck and shoulder were relaxed. I was back to normal after a day or two after the final treatment.
An opportunity came to me to learn CranioSacral with Aaron Zweig. Taking that 20-hour course was like wearing an old shoe, I put it on and ran with it! It’s very similar to energy work except focusing more on the cranium, spine and sacrum. Now that I have the training, and combined with my energy medicine work, I am very excited that I have this in bag of goodies to use in my practice.
If you have never experienced CranioSacral before, or you have had a session–either way it’s a great opportunity to take me up on this special introductory offer!
